Dress how you want to feel: Women of Influence

Style is such a personal and subjective thing. We are always told that your style is a way of expressing who you are, but who you are is always evolving and therefore your style is too. With each new person you are exposed to, you will be influenced by their energy, their style and what they are creating. Here at A Silver Circle, we love to dress how we want to feel and embodying a sister who goes after life in their own unique way is great influence on us.

In light of International Women’s Day in March, we at A Silver Circle have been reflecting on women that inspire us and the brand. So it’s only fitting this month for the blog that we have compiled a list of four different iconic women who boldly expressed themselves through their personal style and their art form. We have had so much fun matching each A Silver Circle piece to the spirit of each of these amazing women.

STEVIE NICKS

Known as the Goddess of Rock, Stevie Nicks, exudes an edgy confidence both on and off stage. As the first female solo artist to be inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she is a fierce pioneer in her industry who has powered her way through her career, not caring about what others think of her. Now in her 70s she refuses to slow down, still continuing to rock the stage in her signature sparkly shawls, flared-sleeved, lacey, dark looks.

On days you want to channel your inner boho rock, here are our selection of ASC pieces that would add the perfect edge to your outfit! VIRGINIA WOOLF

One of the most important writers of the 20th century, Virginia Woolf was an excellent mind, a lover of language and a keen observer of the modern world. Aside from her critically acclaimed novels, especially Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), she also wrote pioneering essays on artistic theory, literary history, women’s writing, and the politics of power. Although Woolf was not a big fan of the spotlight she received, she pursued her passion with intelligence, determination and an understated feminine grace.

JONI MITCHELL

An icon of the Woodstock generation, Joni Mitchell is loved for her comforting songs of love and suffering which she sings in her beautiful soprano voice. As a folk artist in the 70s, many of her songs also reflect social and environmental ideals which go hand in hand with her bright, wholesome, gypsy personality. Her youthfulness also translated into her fashion sense of flowy dresses and earthy colours.

For when you want to embody that free gypsy spirit, here are some ASC pieces that draw inspiration from nature and will bring you good energy. FRIDA KAHLO

One of the most distinguished artists in history, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is a household name. She is most well-known for her self-portraits inspired by nature and cultural artefacts of Mexico, exploring questions of identity, gender, post colonialism and class. Following her death, the feminist movement of the 1970s led to renewed interest in her life and work, and Kahlo is now viewed by many as an icon of female creativity. Her strong sense of culture and her vibrant and eclectic persona boldly came through her artworks as well as her dress – colourful and patterned.

At ASC we are inspired by her spirit and her play with shapes and colours. To embody the Frida spirit, we love to express our unique and more creative side. Sustainability at ASC

Here at A Silver Circle, we are extremely conscious of the impact that our business has on the environment. Even though we are not perfect, we’d like to share with you some everyday things we do in the studio to reduce our impact. We believe a thousand people doing an imperfect job is better than one person doing it alone.

We’ve broken down our eco-friendly practices into a few categories so you can learn more about what sustainable actions we are taking and how you can also contribute.

MATERIALS

Not many people are aware of the lack of sustainability around silver jewellery products. Like the mining of any other metal, silver mining is having a destructive impact on our environment through greenhouse gas emission; not to mention the large amount of metals being thrown away each year through old mobile phones. We are working hard to combat this waste of precious resources to create more sustainable jewellery through every step of our creative process.
We start by using recycled sterling silver for ALL of our pieces. Unused silver is melted down and remade into wire or sheet metal that can then used to construct new forms and designs. Any offcuts from our new designs are again recycled by being melted down again to be reused. So there is virtually no wastage of this beautiful precious material.

Here at ASC we love to experiment with recycled materials as seen through our Branch Collection (Check out our Branch Pendant) and former Computer Chip collection. We also love adding sustainably sourced stones in our collection like in our Amazonite Ring. As much as we love our colourful Resin Collection, we have unfortunately had to discontinue this as unfortunately this is not a sustainable material. We look forward to finding other colourful sustainable materials for our future pieces.

STUDIO PRACTICES
In the studio we are all about reduce, reuse and recycle.

Reduce: We have been taking steps to reduce the amount of plastic and other materials that come into the studio as much as possible: through buying bulk and staying clear of plastic foods, asking suppliers for less packaging and picking up things instead of shipping. Every year, 6.5 million tonnes of business waste is going to landfill across Australia, so it’s really important that we all take little steps every day to make a bigger impact in the long run.

Reuse: While Australia have made some steps towards reducing single-use plastic, we still use around 3.3 billion plastic bags a year. We don’t want to contribute to this statistic, therefore we reuse absolutely everything we can! Firstly we start within our studio- seeing a lot of our materials still come in plastic sealed bags, we reuse them for holding stock or Corinne’s students’ work to prevent tarnished. Lastly, we ensure that all boxes we receive are repurposed by using them to ship new orders to you.

Recycling: The bags mentioned above are reused over and over until they are no longer useful- then they get recycled in our Recycle bin in the studio and dropped off to our local supermarket for recycling. While plastic and packaging recycling in Australia is well established, still only 14% of plastic is recovered for recycling. Clearly we would love this number to increase, so all of our business practices will be carried out with this goal in mind.

Composting: Our studio is in an industrial area, so there is no outdoor space for us to use as a lovely worm farm, however we have an Urban Composter, which means we can compost all of our food scraps in the studio and drop it off to an established worm farm in the local area (you could find some in your area through Sharewaste) to then be broken down fully and reused. Composting is such a simple and rewarding process that we care a lot about as it keeps as much as 30% of waste from going into the bin. If you ever stumble into our workshop, you’ll probably notice the incredible amounts of tea consumed on a daily basis. That’s why we strive to use loose leaf teas and faze out all use of tea bags. Although these are small decisions, they are also important ones.

ONE TREE PLANTED

We are taking the initiative to give back to the planet by planting one tree for every sale made in person or online. We are inspired by One Tree Planted: an initiative that is planting trees in areas of deforestation around the globe to combat this increasingly severe problem. As we’ve seen with the Amazon Rainforest fires, drastic amounts of land and vegetation are being burnt as a result of climate change and deforestation.

SHIPPING

Setting goals to reduce our carbon footprint is critical for us to become the business we have always aspired to be! Being environmentally conscious though our shipping of orders is very important to us and something we are continually striving to do better in.

All of our regular post orders use compostable bags or cardboard boxes as they are easily reused or recycled. Some boxes or packing material are recycled from other deliveries we have recieved. All our jewellery and other accessories are stored in previously used boxes to ensure we get the most use out of them as possible. We are continually working on a means of express-posting orders plastic free, so bear with us in the meantime!

Packaging: Our boxes, paper bags and carry bags are all cardboard so that they can be recycled or composted (ripped up into small pieces). They do however have a foam insert which are not currently recyclable but we are looking into a better alternative. This is where we would love to hear from you! If you have any great ideas please let us know as we are always welcoming suggestions to make our business more environmentally conscious everyday.

Easy transitions: Day to night styling

Have you ever had trouble transitioning your jewellery from outfit to outfit, for day to night or how to add that little thing to make the outfit pop?

Well, we have created a few different looks for you to see how versatile the jewellery at A Silver Circle really is, and how easy it is to look stunning, vibrant and 100% you in any situation. We have explored three different looks, to cover all the little events you might find yourself in.

Look 1: From the office to casual drinks after work

As modern-day women, working 50+ hours a week in the office can be a hard thing for us ladies to style and make work each day. We want chic, minimalist with a bit of flare. So, when your colleges ask you out for a few drinks at Freds or another cute bar in Surry Hills- you will probably want to let your hair out and add that little pop of a cool casual vibe, to wash the day away.

You are a chic lady. Black dress pants and a minimalist elegant work top works well and makes you presentable for all your meetings. To make your look, we have put you in our Islamic Studs, to add a bit of shin to your ears, a plain stack of rings (Thin hammered, Twisted and Plain) to your fingers and added a Domed Patterned Pendant to your neck. We want you to look smart yet stylish for your hard days work.

Not having time to duck home before drinks, you add over the blouse a clean elegant jacket and a colourful scarf to achieve that cool casual effortless style you want to let your hair down after a long day. Look 2: From brunch with the girls to a nice dinner date

You know those days, when suddenly you have a whole bunch of everything happening at once. You forget about the ladies’ brunch with afternoon drinks you’re supposed to be having because you were totally preoccupied with that dinner date you have with someone special that evening.

When meeting your ladies, we have put you in a cute happy day dress, one you can easily pair with some sandals and a cute shoulder bag. The look is accentuated with some colour from your Islamic Stone Drop Earrings in Amethyst and Rhodonite ring stacked with Black Twist and Hammered layering ring, which is all tied together with your Navajo Diamond Pendant that delicately combines geometry and elegance.
