The Story of A Silver Circle

Having operated for nearly four years now, the A Silver Circle has endured the breezy highs and the stormy lows that come along with starting a new business. Regardless, the journey has been incredible and has unfolded into something special. In this blog post, we will get up close and personal with Owner and Designer Corinne, on how A Silver Circle has come to be what it is today.

Despite being an Honors Graduate with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Jewellery and Object Design since 2011, Corinne was working full time in retail before it all began in 2013. She hit a standstill when she suddenly decided to quit with no idea what she was going to do. Little did she know, that this decision would lead to a number of things falling into place.

Corinne visited a careers advisor named Chloe. Completely by chance, she noticed the beauty in the Jewellery Corinne was wearing and asked where it was from. Of course, with such a budding passion for jewellery design, all of the pieces Corinne was wearing were her own work. Chloe was incredibly impressed to hear this and immediately was able to see Corinne’s future career, crystal clear. Chloe suggested that Corinne considered starting a business, and helped her enroll in a government funded small business course.

In November 2013, Corinne came to the point her whole life had been leading towards. She launched A Silver Circle. Instantly, it was a full time Job with Corinne working long hours to develop everything from websites to packaging, and learning how to set up market stalls.

“I was excited but very apprehensive because in terms of the business side of things, I was diving into something I didn’t have any real knowledge or experience in.”

Not only did Corinne deal with the internal fear that comes along with the ongoing risks of running a small business, but her friends and family also had their own doubts.

“Everyone expected I would want to do it but my family and boyfriend at the time were wary of it, they weren’t the most supportive because they didn’t want me to struggle.”

Today the focus has shifted, and Corinne looks at her business as being all about expressing herself and her values through her jewellery. The designs are created to be wearable, rather than appropriated from exhibition pieces.

Corinne now places a major emphasis on offering eco friendly jewellery.

“I was always using some recycled materials, although it was more out of an interest in the materials with the main focus being about creating interesting contemporary pieces. Today It’s a personal thing too, I want to be more sustainable as a person and as a business. It’s a personal exploration now of balancing those two elements.”

When thinking about the future of A Silver Circle, Corinne wants to expand so that her jewellery is available in shops near you. In saying that, she doesn’t want the brand to become too commercial. Its important to her that she keeps the essence of it being a handmade Australia brand. She would love to be able to hire up and coming jewelers and help them learn their craft.

“I get my jewellery interns to try quite a lot of different techniques so they have the opportunity to learn a range of things and start to master those skills.”

Moving forward, A Silver Circle hopes to embody its new focus of eco friendly products and continues its design of new and elegant pieces.

Father’s Day Gift Guide

Fathers day is renowned for being one of the most difficult holidays to shop for. Dads never seem to know what they want, and there’s only so many years in a row that you can buy them new socks. With that in mind, we’ve created a father’s day gift guide to help you with that tricky decision and to make this Father’s Day one to remember.

Since we know that all dads are different, we have divided the gift guide into 3 different dads: the office dad, the cool trendy dad, and the more casual dad.

The office dad is typically the more conservative type of dad who works hard in his 9-5 office job. Even though they may not be a big jewellery wearer, we have something that they will not only feel comfortable wearing, but even a little bit fancy!

The textured cufflinks are all about simplicity. Without drawing too much attention, they will add a subtle sophistication to your dad’s office wear.

Another simple textured piece is the domed patterned cufflinks which are available in four different patterns. These are versatile enough to go from IT consultant to the CEO.

We all know a dad who thinks they are the coolest thing ever. If your dad is a little bit like Phil from The Modern Family and loves to crack dad jokes, then we’ve got you covered.

The Large Rectangular Reversible Pendent is ultra cool as it comes on a long 70cm chain. With 18 ct. gold bonded to sterling silver, the necklace is versatile if you’re not entirely sure whether your dad prefers gold or silver.

If your dad is that geeky kind of cool, the Computer Chip Cufflinks are absolutely perfect. These unique cufflinks will leave your dad feeling like one of a kind.

The casual dad is that super laid back dad that is easy going, and loves to opt for comfort over style. These kind of dads are all about a relaxed Sunday by the beach, an Aussie BBQ or a chilled afternoon reading the newspaper. We’ve selected two simple but easily wearable rings for all those casual dads out there.

The Hammered Ring Band is made from strong and thick sterling silver for a subtle yet charming look. The way it is hammered creates an interestingly masculine look.

For a slightly more sophisticated but still relaxed look, the Thin version of the Hammered Ring Band is perfect. This one can also be layered if you were planning to gift your dad with an entire collection.

No matter who your dad is, one of these options is sure to please him. On behalf of everyone at A Silver Circle we would love to wish you and your dad a very happy Father’s Day.

Celebrating the Geometric Collection

As the brand has evolved over time, Corinne has gradually developed the beautiful Geometric collection. This elegant collection is all about using different angles, contrasting open negative space with positive space from within the same piece of jewellery. Recently we added our brand new Geometric Pendent and Earrings to the collection.

In celebration of this new addition, we are going to take you back to the beginning with our A Silver Circle Ring. The A Silver Circle signature ring is a simplistic yet sentimental piece encapsulating the original essence of the brand. The ring creates a very delicate and beautiful illusion of a circle floating on the finger.

The process of making the A Silver Circle Ring is intricate and complex. We will now take you ‘behind the scenes’ with Corinne in our Studio and explain all of the steps we go through to create this signature piece.

Firstly, Corinne will take a piece of silver wire and measure it to the correct length. This will then need to be heated with a torch before it can be easily bent into the desired shape.

In the case of a circle, the wire is placed on a tapered cone-shaped mandrel. A rawhide mallet, made from a coil of leather, is used to even out the shape along the mandrel without denting the wire.

To get the two ends to attach, tension needs to be created in the wire. Once the ends are aligned, a small amount of solder is applied and melted with the torch. This helps the ends to permanently fix together.

To turn it into a ring, another piece of wire which will become the ring band needs to be attached. This wire is filed in a channel which matches up perfectly with the side of the circle so they hug each other securely. Again, solder is used to attach the ends.

Once this is done, the ring is now constructed and can be filed and polished to get that shiny finish.

The signature ring was expanded into a ring collection including the Hexagon, Square, Oval, Triangle, and the 9 ct. Gold Edition of the ring. We are now premiering the Geometric Pendant and Earrings which are quite unique and beautiful in their own way. With the two different shapes hanging independently on opposite angles, their gentle movement can really catch the eye.

Organics Collection

Are you wanting to add some subtle colour and a different shape to your jewellery collection? Then the new Organics Collection has you covered. This new collection features a variety of organic shaped pieces, from small and large stud earrings, to small and large dropped earrings and pendants that all come in four different cool toned matte colours.

This collection is like nothing A Silver Circle has done in the past. This collection has been on the works for quite some time. The process had a trial and error basis with many prototypes being made before perfecting the organic shape that you see now. Creating a shallow domed form retains the organics shape while also containing the matte enamel paint colour. This pop of colour gives each piece the perfect amount of balance between matte and shine.

“I wanted to make a collection that strayed away from geometric shapes of previous collections to more fluid and organic shapes. To bring this idea to life I started by drawing out many organics shapes, I did this until I found shapes that I was happy with, I then cut them out and began to make prototypes to realize the design. With this new and creative shape I felt it needed something extra. So, I took it a step further by adding colour. I had experimented with enamel paint in the past and I knew I wanted to include it as part of this collection. I found the matte finish embodied the vision I was wanting, resulting in finding four beautiful colours that represent the collections elegant, creative and unique look.” – Corinne, Designer

As every piece is handmade, no two pieces will be the same. This gives the Organics Collection a unique and special touch. Whether it be the studs, pendants, or dropped earrings the Organics Collection is perfect for completing any casual look with a creative shape and pop of colour.

Evolution of the Resin Collection

The Resin Collection that we all know and love today came from a long process of experimentation. The collection began with a different idea of using enamel paints to create colour in domed forms. The first form and shape that the resin was tested in were large round studs. Then came the small round studs, square studs and finally the triangular studs. Enamel was initially used for adding colour to the domed forms but its use was quickly replaced with resin to add more depth and shine to the prototypes. Corinne continued to experiment with the resin by adding found, natural and man-made objects, like flock (wool refuse) and paper to add texture to the pieces. She then found and began testing using silver, copper and gold leaf with the resin which focused the collection.

The studs were first created in about 20 different colours and were subsequently tested to choose the best 9 which are available today. These colours and shapes, excepting a few, were then adapted to pendants and drop earrings to broaden the collection. These exceptions were the triangular shape and paper fill options that are only available with the studs.

The resin drop earrings are made using the same process as the studs – filling a domed shape with a clear or dyed resin set with crumpled silver, gold or copper leaf. The use of metal leaf adds a beautiful depth and shine to the pieces, which are available in large and small round, and square. There are 7 colours to choose from for the drop earrings.

Similarly, the resin pendants are perfect for adding colour to any outfit. Mix and match the pendants with each other or with other necklaces to create a bright and elegant look. The pendant is available in 7 different colours.

About a year after the creation of the pendants and drop earrings, the Resin Cufflinks were created. The Resin Cufflinks are also available in the same 7 colours as the drop earrings and pendants. Using simplicity in the form, the focus is all about the colour and shine housed within which creates depth and movement.

The latest addition to this collection is the black silver colour option which will be available in the studs, drop earrings, pendants and cufflinks. This design uses black dye in the resin and silver leaf for shine. The new colour option is sure to bring monochromatic tone and a delicate finish to any outfit.

The Resin Collection has been on quite a journey to the where it is today. We hope you liked hearing the origins of the colourful collection that’s now integral to A Silver Circle Design. Make sure to check out the new items in our online store!
